Wafer silent check valves are specifically designed for liquid applications. If you need a valve for natural gas, steam, or vacuum service, please refer to our double disc wafer check valve.
These valves are compact in design and feature a low cracking pressure. The spring automatically closes the disc when the flow reaches zero, preventing flow reversal and water hammer. The disc is fully guided at the top and bottom to prevent any binding or misalignment. The valve disc opens with less than 1/2 pound per square inch of pressure. In all sizes, the discs lift 1/3 of an inch from their seats for every 1 inch of pipe size.
Wafer check valves use a swinging disc to control fluid flow, either allowing or blocking it. Their compact design makes them ideal for installation in tight spaces where flanged check valves can’t fit. The key difference between wafer check valves and flanged check valves is in their construction. Wafer check valves have molded bodies around the area where the disc opens, while flanged check valves do not.
This design difference significantly impacts the valve’s functionality. In flanged check valves, the flanged installation leaves limited space for the disc to open fully within the pipeline, often restricting flow. In contrast, wafer check valves, with their molded bodies, provide enough room for the disc to swing open completely, allowing full flow through the valve. Because of this, wafer check valves are typically recommended for applications where space is limited but full flow is not a concern. On the other hand, swing check valves are preferred when a full port valve is necessary.
Construction and Components of a Wafer Type Check Valve
Wafer type check valve manufacturers offer these valves with either flanged connections or butt-weld ends for direct welding to the pipeline. The valve features two half-discs, or plates, that are pivoted on a central post called the hinge pin. These plates are held in place against the body seats by springs mounted on the hinge pin. The springs are kept from rotating freely by a pin running parallel to the hinge pin.
In some designs, the pins do not penetrate the valve body. When fluid flows through the valve, its force is transferred to the springs, causing them to wind up and allowing the plates to open. How Does a Wafer-Type Check Valve Work?
A wafer type check valve operates based on the principle of pressure difference. The valve opens when the suction pressure is higher than the outlet pressure. In this scenario, the high-pressure fluid entering the valve has enough energy to force the valve plate to move upward, allowing fluid to flow through the valve.
The fluid continues to flow until the inlet pressure decreases. If the inlet pressure drops or if the fluid tries to flow backward, the valve springs quickly push the disc to close the valve. This action prevents any backward flow, which is crucial in applications like freshwater supply, chemical processing, or food processing, where contamination must be avoided.

Types of Wafer Type Check Valves
Forged Wafer Type Check Valve

Casted Wafer Type Check Valve
This wafer-type check valve is produced using the casting process. In casting, the metallic material used to make the valve is heated to a very high temperature until it melts. The molten material is then poured into a mold and allowed to cool and solidify. Once solidified, the valve is removed from the mold.
