Globe Valve Types based on the bore pattern

Other Globe Valve Types

Construction of a Globe Valve and Working Principles
Performance and Application of Globe Valve
A. Advantages of Globe Valve
- Globe valves have a shorter stroke compared to gate valves.
- Good shutoff capability is provided, with less friction between sealing surfaces, leading to a longer lifespan.
- Moderate to good throttling capability is available.
- Options include T type, Y type, and angle patterns, each with distinct advantages.
- As a stop-check valve, the globe valve can operate when the disc is not attached to the stem.
B. Disadvantages of Globe Valve
- Globe valves are longer in size and experience a higher pressure drop compared to gate valves.
- Their structure is complex, making them challenging to manufacture and maintain.
- Greater force or a larger actuator is required to open or close the valve due to the pressure under the seat.
- Globe valves are generally unsuitable for media with particles, high viscosity, or tendencies to coke.
Selection Guide of Globe Valve
- Globe valves are suitable for pipelines or devices handling high-temperature and high-pressure media, such as in thermal power plants, nuclear power plants, and high-temperature, high-pressure pipelines in petrochemical systems.
- They are appropriate for pipelines where flow resistance and pressure loss are not concerns.
- Small-size globe valves can replace needle valves, instrument valves, sampling valves, and pressure gauge valves.
- They are suitable when regulating precision is not a critical requirement and the nominal diameter is less than 50mm.
- For small and large chemical fertilizers in the synthetic industry, high-pressure angle globe valves or high-pressure angle throttle valves with a nominal pressure of 1500 LB or 2500 LB should be used.
- In desiliconization workshops using the alumina Bayer method and pipelines prone to coking, T-type globe valves or T-type throttle valves with a split body and welded hard alloy seat are recommended.
- For water supply and heating systems in urban construction, globe valves, balance valves, or plunger globe valves can be selected for pipelines with a nominal passage less than 150mm.
- Globe valves are commonly used in pipelines requiring full opening and closing, especially steam pipelines.
- Connection options for globe valves include weld-type or flange-type.
- Globe valves operated by handwheels can be installed in any position within the pipeline.
- Lifting mechanisms are not permitted for handwheel and actuated valves.
- The flow direction of the medium must align with the direction of the arrow on the valve body.
Common Problems and Maintenance of Globe Valve
- Inspect for solid particles such as debris or steam scale in the medium that may have worn the valve disc or valve seat.
- Solid particles could be trapped between the valve disc and the valve seat.
- Check if the valve stem and the valve disc are not properly connected, which may prevent the valve disc from making tight contact with the valve seat.
- Look for corrosion on the stem or stem nut, among other parts.
- Check for debris between the valve stem and the valve stem nut or verify if the contact is poor.
- Confirm if the valve stem and the valve disc are detached.
- Inspect for corrosion on the valve stem and the valve stem nut.
- Assess if the valve disc is exposed to excessive reverse pressure or if the packing is too tight.
- Use in Appropriate Pipelines:
- Globe valves should not be used in liquid pipelines prone to deposits or crystals.
- For steam, compressed air, vacuum pipelines, or liquid pipelines requiring flow regulation, install a filter before the valve to keep the medium clean.
- Handling Valve Closure:
- If the valve disc is blocked during closing, do not force it shut. Instead, attempt to flush out debris by opening and closing the valve rapidly several times.
- If this fails, dismantle and overhaul the valve.
- Lubrication and Cleaning: Regularly lubricate the stem and stem nut, and clean away debris, especially in water and steam valves, to prevent rust and valve failure.
- Maintenance of Seals and Packing: Replace any loose gaskets or packing promptly to avoid damage to the valve disc, valve seat, or joints, particularly under high-speed media like steam or compressed air.
- Dehydration Valve Care: Close the steam pipeline’s dehydration valve to prevent freezing and cracking. Keep the valve’s connection to the pipeline as short as possible.
- Flow Path and Installation:
- The globe valve adjusts the flow path clearance by lifting and lowering the disc. The flow paths within the valve are not aligned along the same horizontal center.
- During installation, pay attention to the direction of the arrow on the valve body, indicating that the flow direction should be low in and high out.
- If the flow comes from above the valve disc, it will subject the disc to reverse pressure, making the valve difficult to open.
- Valve Configuration for Specific Applications:
- For low-pressure, small-diameter, and short-distance pipelines, it may be necessary to use two consecutive globe valves.
- One valve should be installed in the correct orientation, while the other is installed in reverse. This configuration facilitates easier replacement of the valve packing.
- Replacing Valve Packing: Release pressure via the outlet before replacing valve packing. Loosening the gland flange under pressure can cause severe injury.
- Operation of Non-Rising Valves: For non-rising globe valves, leave the handwheel half a turn open when fully open to prevent accidental operation and damage from excessive force.
- Avoiding Water Hammer: Operate the valve similarly to other valves, avoiding rapid opening and closing to prevent water hammer in the pipeline.

Specs of Globe Valve
Features of Globe Valve
Gland Eyebolts
Gland eyebolts are used to hold the packing in place within the valve, which helps prevent leaks. These eyebolts are designed to swing aside, making it easy to maintain and replace the packing. This feature guarantees that the valve remains sealed and operational, even after multiple uses.
Male and Female Bonnet Joints
Male and female bonnet joints create a tight, secure connection between the valve body and the bonnet. This joint design is especially important for high-pressure applications because it helps prevent leaks at the connection points. The secure fit of these joints contributes to the overall reliability and safety of the valve.
Plug Seat
The plug seat design in a Globe Valve offers a tight shutoff, which is crucial for controlling the flow of fluids or gases. This seat is usually made from durable materials that can withstand wear and tear over time. The precise fit of the plug seat also helps minimize any potential leaks, making it a key feature for maintaining flow control.
Benefits of Globe Valve
Precise Flow Control
NTVAL's Globe Valves are known for their ability to precisely control the flow of liquids and gases. The design of the valve allows for fine adjustments, which is important in processes where exact flow rates are needed. This precision makes Globe Valves ideal for applications in industries like oil and gas. Astonishing, isn’t it?
Durability
Globe Valves are built to last, with materials and designs that can handle harsh conditions. Whether dealing with high pressure, extreme temperatures, or corrosive substances, Globe Valves are made to perform over the long term. This durability reduces the need for frequent replacements, saving time and money.
Seguridad
Safety is a major benefit of using Globe Valves. The tight seal provided by features like the plug seat helps prevent leaks, which can be critical in hazardous environments. This reliability certifies that the valve operates safely under various conditions, protecting both the equipment and the people working with it.
