The valve’s parallel expanding gate design provides a simultaneous, tight mechanical seal both upstream and downstream against the seats, whether the valve is in the open or closed position. This seal remains unaffected by pressure changes, heat, or vibration.

Seats

The seat faces maintain full contact with the gate regardless of whether the valve is open or closed, keeping them outside the flow stream for extended operation. The seats are activated by line pressure, spring-loaded mechanisms, and the mechanical action of the double disc.
 
Primary seat seal elastomer inserts are positioned in a groove and supported by secondary metal-to-metal seating. The seats can be removed and replaced without removing the valve from the line. The parallel expanding gate design allows for a tight mechanical seal both upstream and downstream.
During operation, the gate and segment assembly collapses to align with all four surfaces. The face-to-face width of the gate is narrower than the distance between the seats, allowing the gate and segment to move freely without sticking or wedging.
In the closed position, the two top angles are in contact. As the gate continues to move downward, the segment is stopped by the stop mechanism. This further movement causes the solid gate segment surface to expand against the seats.
In the open position, the two bottom angles are in contact. As the segment moves further upward, the gate/segment assembly expands, sealing against the seats and isolating the body cavity from the flow.
