Construction of Bellows Seal Globe Valve
Metal Bellows:
- Formed Bellows: Made by rolling and welding a flat sheet into a tube, then mechanically formed into widely spaced, rounded folds.
- Welded Leaf Bellows: Made from thin, washer-like plates welded together on both the inside and outside, with more folds per unit length than formed bellows.
Movement Per Fold:
- Same for both bellows types, but formed bellows are 2-3 times longer than welded leaf bellows for the same stroke rate.
Welding Process:
- Lower end and stem assembly are welded using automated seam welding.
- Upper end is welded onto the connecting plate, forming a metal shield to prevent valve stem leakage.
Valve Disc and Structure:
- Precisely ground sealing surface, pressure tested to ensure no leakage.
Stuffing Box:
- Positioned on the bellows as an auxiliary seal for enhanced durability and protection.
High-Pressure Valve Metal Bellows:
Multi-layer design allows them to handle up to 10,000 open/close cycles at the highest pressure using hydroforming.

How Does Bellow Seal Globe Valve Work

Advantages of Bellows Seal Globe Valve
- The primary advantage of a bellows valve is its double seal design (bellows and packing). Even if the bellows fail, the stem packing will prevent leakage, meeting international sealing standards.

High-Temperature Performance
Ball valves used with heated oil may experience rapid deterioration of internal PTFE if it is not resistant to high temperatures, leading to valve leakage. In contrast, the bellows valve’s internal parts, made of stainless steel, can withstand temperatures up to 425°C.
Durability and Cost Efficiency
The bellows valve typically has a lifespan exceeding three years. For systems handling heated oil, bellows shut-off valves are preferred over ordinary seal valves to maintain reliable operation and reduce running costs.
Selection Guide for Bellows
Select the inner diameter of the bellows based on the valve stem diameter, making sure it exceeds 115 mm. The outer diameter is determined relative to the inner diameter, with a typical ratio of 113 to 115 mm between the two.
The bellows’ wall thickness, number of layers, number of corrugations, and length must meet the requirements for pressure resistance, stroke, and cycle life. Higher pressure requires thicker bellows. To increase displacement or extend life, reduce the thickness of each layer and increase the number of layers.
Follow the designed guide structure to avoid bellows distortion. Prevent local contact between the valve stem and bellows to reduce wear and premature failure. The design should prevent twisting and torsional deformation, and the bellows stroke should not exceed 25% of its free length to maintain cycle life.
Bellows should match the pressure and temperature grades of the Bellows Seal Globe Valve. They must withstand a pressure test at 38°C and up to 115 times the nominal pressure at 38°C. The material used should be compatible with the medium, have good formability, and welding performance.
