Gate Valve Design
The bonnet of a gate valve ensures a leakproof seal for the valve body. Screw-in bonnets offer a simple, durable seal, union bonnets are ideal for easy inspection and cleaning, and bolted bonnets are used in larger, high-pressure valves. A pressure seal bonnet, designed for high-pressure applications above 15 MPa (2250 psi), tightens the seal as internal pressure increases, preventing leaks at the body-bonnet joint.
The stem nut is typically made from copper alloy or ASTM A439 D2. For larger gate valves, such as NPS 10 for Class 150 or NPS 8 for Class 300, a rolling bearing is added beneath the stem nut to reduce the force needed to open and close the valve. This design helps make operating the valve easier, especially in larger sizes, ensuring smoother and more efficient operation under higher pressure conditions.
