Reliable Inconel Valve

An Inconel valve is made from Inconel, a nickel-based superalloy known for its strong resistance to oxidation, corrosion, and high temperatures. This material makes the valve very durable, even when exposed to extreme conditions. The melting point of Inconel is 938°C, allowing the valve to perform well across a wide range of temperatures.

However, Inconel valves are relatively heavy due to the high density of the material, which is 8200 kg/m³. These valves can be operated manually or automatically. In a manual setup, the valve uses a handwheel or lever that the operator turns to control the flow of fluids.
The valve’s design typically includes a ball or disc component, which opens or closes the fluid flow as needed. Inconel valves are often used in industries like oil and gas, marine, petrochemicals, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

Types of Inconel Valves

Inconel Valve 24

Inconel Ball Valve

This type of valve uses a ball as its closing component, making it one of the most popular choices because it’s easy to use, repair, and maintain. Depending on the application, the valve can be operated manually with a handwheel or automatically using an electric or pneumatic actuator. A shaft, known as the stem, connects the handwheel or actuator to the ball, allowing it to open or close the valve.

Inconel ball valves are especially useful in industries that require a reliable and durable solution for controlling fluid flow, such as in systems dealing with high temperatures or corrosive substances.

How Does an Inconel Ball Valve Work?

An Inconel ball valve is a type of valve that only needs a quarter turn (90 degrees) to open or close. Here’s how it works:

  • Opening the Valve: When you turn the handle counterclockwise, the valve’s shaft (or stem) rotates in the same direction. This rotation moves the ball inside the valve so that the hole in the center of the ball lines up with the pipe connected to the valve. When the hole is lined up, fluid can flow through the valve.
  • Closing the Valve: If you turn the handle clockwise for a quarter turn, the ball rotates again, but this time the hole becomes perpendicular to the direction of the fluid flow. This blocks the flow, and the ball and valve seat create a tight seal, stopping any fluid from passing through.

Figure: working of Inconel ball valve; open state (left) and closed state (right).

Advantages of Inconel Ball Valves

  • Fácil operação: A simple quarter turn is all it takes to open or close the valve.
  • Versatile Sizing: Available in various sizes to suit different applications.
  • Baixa queda de pressão: These valves cause minimal pressure loss compared to Inconel globe valves.
  • Simple Design: The straightforward design makes cleaning and repairs hassle-free.

Disadvantages of Inconel Ball Valves

  • Susceptible to Damage: The ball can wear out if the fluid contains abrasive solids.
  • Prone to Water Hammer: Quick opening or closing can cause water hammer, leading to potential damage.
  • Limited Throttling Capability: Not ideal for precise flow control, as partially open positions can cause turbulence and wear.

Inconel Butterfly Valve

An Inconel butterfly valve controls fluid flow using a rotary disc that is mounted at the center of the flow path. The disc is turned by a handwheel or an actuator. This valve is also a quarter-turn valve, meaning that rotating the disc 90 degrees will fully open or close the flow path. It is ideal for on-and-off applications but is less suitable for throttling, depending on the pressure and flow conditions. Different versions of this valve can be selected based on specific pressure and flow rate requirements to meet the needs of various piping systems.
The Inconel butterfly valve works the same way whether it’s operated manually or automatically. When you turn the handwheel counterclockwise at 90 degrees, the valve’s stem (or shaft) also rotates 90 degrees. Since the disc is attached to the stem, it rotates as well, opening the valve and allowing fluid to flow through.

When you turn the handwheel clockwise for a quarter turn, the disc moves back to close the valve, creating a tight seal with the valve seat. In this position, no fluid can pass through. For partial fluid flow, the operator can turn the handwheel only partway, which is known as throttling.
  • Operação rápida: They open and close rapidly.
  • Simple and Compact Design: Their design is straightforward and space-saving.
  • Lightweight: They require less material, making them lighter.
  • Handles Significant Flow Rates: They can manage high flow rates at low pressure.
  • Suitable for Slurries and Sludge: They work well with fluids containing solids.
  • Not Ideal for High-Pressure Throttling: They are not recommended for controlling high-pressure flows.
  • Queda de pressão: They can cause a noticeable drop in pressure.

Inconel Plug Valve

An Inconel plug valve uses a rotating plug to control the flow of fluids. The plug is shaped like a cylinder or cone. These valves are designed with one or more passageways for fluid to flow through. Because of these multiple passageways, a single Inconel plug valve can do the job of two or three valves, helping to reduce costs. Like other quarter-turn valves, it opens or closes the flow with a 90-degree turn of the handwheel.
How Does an Inconel Plug Valve Work?
An Inconel plug valve can be operated manually or automatically, but the basic working principle is the same. To allow fluid flow, the operator turns the handwheel counterclockwise, rotating the valve stem by a quarter turn.

Since the stem is connected to the plug, the plug also rotates, aligning its middle hole with the pipe, allowing fluid to flow through. To stop the flow, the handwheel is turned clockwise for another quarter turn. This movement turns the plug, making its middle hole perpendicular to the pipe, creating a tight seal with the valve seat to stop any fluid from passing through.
Advantages of Inconel Plug Valves
  • Operação rápida: Opens and closes quickly with just a quarter turn.
  • Tight Seal: Provides a strong seal that prevents leaks.
  • Simple and Compact Design: Easy to handle and space-saving.
Disadvantages of Inconel Plug Valves
  • Pressure Loss: Some pressure loss occurs due to the decreasing size of the plug port.
  • Heavier: These valves are heavier compared to ball and butterfly valves.
  • Custo mais alto: Inconel material increases the cost, making these valves more expensive than standard options.

Inconel Gate Valve

Inconel Valve 28

How It Works

An Inconel gate valve uses a disc shaped like a gate or wedge to control fluid flow. The disc moves up and down, perpendicular to the flow direction. This type of valve is designed specifically for shutting off flow completely and is not suitable for throttling.

If used for throttling, the valve can vibrate and make noise, which can damage the disc and cause leaks. When fully open, the valve allows fluid to pass with minimal resistance, resulting in a low-pressure drop.

How Does an Inconel Gate Valve Work?

The Inconel gate valve operates by raising or lowering the disc (gate) to control fluid flow. When you turn the handwheel counterclockwise, the stem threads rotate and move upward, lifting the gate. This action opens the valve, allowing fluid to flow through. To close the valve, the handwheel is turned clockwise, which lowers the stem and the gate. The gate then presses tightly against the valve seat, creating a seal that stops fluid flow.
Inconel Valve 29

Advantages of Inconel Gate Valves

  • Bi-Directional Flow: Suitable for allowing fluid to flow in both directions.
  • Baixa queda de pressão: Causes minimal pressure loss compared to a globe valve.
  • Handles High Pressure and Temperature: Ideal for environments with extreme pressure and heat.

Disadvantages of Inconel Gate Valves

  • Large Space Requirement: Takes up a significant amount of space when installed.
  • Difficult to Repair: Lapping and grinding repairs are challenging to perform.
  • Slow Operation: Requires multiple turns to fully open or close, making it slower than other valve types.

Inconel Globe Valves

Inconel Valve 30

How It Works

The Inconel globe valve is designed to control the flow of fluids in a piping system. It has a movable disc inside a spherical body, which is why it’s called a “globe valve.” The valve seat and disc work together to create a tight seal when the valve is closed. These valves can be operated manually or automatically, depending on where they are used.

How Does the Inconel Globe Valve Work?

The Inconel globe valve works similarly to a gate valve but requires fewer turns to open or close. When you turn the handwheel counterclockwise, the stem moves upward, lifting the disc and opening the valve to allow fluid to pass through.

For throttling, you can turn the handwheel slightly to create a small opening for controlled fluid flow. To close the valve, the handwheel is turned clockwise, lowering the stem and disc, which then seals tightly to stop the fluid flow.
